Climbing Jobs, Benefits and Salaries

Over a half a decade. Where do you sign up?

Yes, you can be a guide. All it takes is a business card claiming to be one. No, the only way to be a guide is to do it the correct way via training and certification, which, to answer the question above, is indeed hard.

The AMGA trains and certifies wannabe guides in three disciplines: Achieving AMGA certification in any one discipline is hard enough. If you want to go for the all three, you first need some years under your belt to prove your competence as both a skier and a climber.

Then plan for a minimum of 90 to days of required AMGA courses and exams, which will actually take five to six years to complete. This can be difficult to stomach as candidates put countless training hours into preparing and also have a large financial investment in their training and certification.

Beyond AMGA to PhD territory is the IFMGA. That stands for International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations, or UIAGM if you parlez francais. When you achieve the highest level of AMGA certification in all three disciplines alpine, rock, ski , you are automatically entered into an elite club of IFMGA certified guides.

But in reality, the lovers of mountains and snow and rock who earn IFMGA certification have transcended are drilled to live with a distinct humility. Yet by far the biggest and longest journey of my life! If, like me, you have anything less, get ready for a challenge.

Southern Oregon University Ashland offers an Outdoor Leadership bachelors degree and is soon to offer a masters. The program is pretty amazing and includes modules in just about everything including mountaineering.

Very nice article to present the profession, however I think it is a bit too limited to high mountains guiding… This profession is every day more wide with the development of new outdoor activities with diferents plays ground cave, canyons, cliffs, snow, ice, water, air….
